Math 330 – Classroom Practices in High School Mathematics

Course Description and Objectives: This course is designed to introduce you to the field of secondary education and the teaching and learning of mathematics in high school classrooms.  You will observe in a local high school classroom and participate in a seminar to discuss learning in a high school culture, cognitive development of students at this level, and the best means to teach appropriate math concepts at this level.  You will be expected to observe a minimum of 12 hours in the high school classroom during the quarter.  Please note that this course is offered every quarter and may be repeated.  The seminar will meet approximately seven times during the quarter.  You are encouraged to take the course for all 3 quarters; no new students will be accepted in the Spring.  Students that complete two quarters of Math 330 receive a stipend of $500.  Students that complete all three quarters receive a stipend of $1000.

CaT3 Science: Thursdays 4:00-5:30pm offered Fall and Winter Quarters
Life Science 73SL – Classroom Practices in High School Science

Course Description and Objectives: This course is designed to introduce you to the field of secondary education and the teaching and learning of science in high school classrooms.  You will be partnered with another student and placed in a local high school classroom to observe, participate, and assist a Mentor Teacher in instruction.  In concert with this field experience, you will participate in the weekly seminar and discuss learning in a high school culture, cognitive development of students at this level, and the best means to teach appropriate science concepts at this level.  You will be expected to work a minimum of 30 hours (~3hrs/week) in the high school classroom during the quarter. 

Prerequisites: Life Science 71SL (CaT1), Life Science 72SL (CaT2), and normal progress towards a degree in science.
