Marina Wallis,
I
attended UCLA for both undergraduate and graduate coursework. I was a
Biology Major. I loved science but was not interested in being a pre-med bio
major. I could not stand the sight of blood and had no interest in working
in a hospital. I knew I needed a much more positive, happy atmosphere to
work in and felt that being a doctor involved too many grave or serious or
sad scenarios. My Senior year of high school I was a part of a university
research project and found lab-work to be too isolationist. Not wanting to
entirely rule it out I continued pursuing lab-work at UCLA as an undergrad
both in a molecular biology lab and then later in a botany lab. Through that
work I realized that working in a lab was just not for me; I am definitely a
'people person' and love the company of lots of people. Teaching was the
best answer to everything that interested me: working to affect societal
change, sharing my interest in science with others and being able to educate
as well as mentor, inspire and love children.

Mark Goldstein, CaT2 Math (72SL)
My name is Mark Goldstein and I work in an office in the UCLA Department of Mathematics called the Mathematics Content Program for Teachers. The MCPT, part of the newly formed Curtis Center for Mathematics and Teaching, provides mathematics coursework for credentialed classroom teachers. Most of my teaching duties at UCLA pertain to the MCPT. The MCPT has also developed (written and published) an algebra readiness program for struggling eighth graders, which is currently going through the state adoption process. I am one of the primary authors of this program, and also train teachers in its implementation in the classroom.
During my 7 years at UCLA I have
also taught courses for undergraduates looking at careers in teaching, and
worked with math departments at several schools sites, providing training
and classroom coaching. Prior to my time at UCLA I taught for 12 years at a
middle school in Santa Monica. I received my BS at UCLA in
Mathematics/Applied Economics, a secondary mathematics teaching credential
from UCLA, and an MA in the Teaching of Mathematics from the Math Department
at CSUDH.
